Saturday was mostly a rough day for BYU's school-sponsored sports teams.

The BYU women's basketball team was hammered by Louisville in an NCAA Tournament first-round game. BYU's women's gymnastics team finished fifth in the five-team conference championships. BYU's softball team completed a sweep of Oklahoma State, but was no-hit by UVU at Miller Field in the second game of a double-header (for the Cougars).

And BYU's men's volleyball team fell in four sets to Pepperdine.

BYU's baseball team was successful, though, pounding Gonzaga 13-4 in Spokane to win the WCC series 2-1 over the Zags.

That said, BYU's rugby team had a big day.

The Cougars, who compete as a club sport, pounded rival Utah 76-31 in the Wasatch Cup on Utah's soccer field to improve to 9-0 on the season. Having beaten Saint Mary's twice, and now Utah in convincing fashion, BYU looks in good shape to win its fourth-straight national championship, fifth overall.

Utah led 3-0 early on a penalty kick, but BYU went ahead 7-3 on a try by Ryan Blaser and never relinquished the lead.

The Cougars took an early 12-10 lead and stretched it to 40-10 at halftime. The Cougars led 57-17 late in the second half and were never threatened.

Blaser, Kody Thompson, Ara Elkington and Jordan Lowry each scored twice for BYU, and footballer Josh Whippy also scored.

Next up for BYU rugby is a home match against Utah Valley University.
