At one time, Park City regularly played Wasatch — as one might expect from a pair of Wasatch Back schools.

The meetings between the Miners and Wasps are fewer because they're not in the same region, or even classification, anymore. But the championship of the Orem Classic saw the two baseball schools transfer the semidormant rivalry to the Wasatch Front on Saturday, and it was Park City, behind the pitching of Scott Stokes, that won the six-team tournament with a 4-0 win over the Wasps.

At Utah Valley University's Brent Brown Ballpark, Stokes limited Wasatch to two hits and struck out five in the shutout.

Stokes is familiar with the Wasps because his family lived in Wasatch School District until they moved to Park City at the beginning of his high school days.

"It's a blast to play these guys. I actually played there three or four years, so it's a privilege to go and play them," Stokes said. "Luckily, I did well."

Park City (8-1) got an early run when Chandler Barkdull doubled to deep center in the bottom of the first. A couple of innings later, the Miners went up 2-0 when a wild pitch allowed Chandler Anderson, who had singled, to come home from second.

Anderson, Barkdull and Stokes were named to the all-tournament team. In the fourth, Anderson doubled home Zack Luna and eventually scored himself on another error.

Wasatch (5-4) got to the championship game after losing to Payson 8-7 on Tuesday, by overwhelming Timpview (22-2) on Wednesday and beating host Orem (14-5) on Friday. Wasps starter Garrett Davis pitched a complete game in the loss to Park City.

"When you have more errors than you have hits, you're not going to win," Wasps coach Mike Shoell said. "We didn't play catch very good today."

The Miners came into the Orem tourney undefeated and stayed that way after beating Mountain View 6-2 on Tuesday. But Orem handed Park City a 7-4 defeat on Wednesday before the Miners bounced back with a 14-6 defeat of Payson.

Like Wasatch, Park City's next step on the schedule is region play, and coach Lou Green wasn't necessarily all that disappointed that his team dropped a game before league action commenced.

"I hate to say I was relieved or happy, but I kind of took a deep breath after we lost," Green said. "Because there's a lot of pressure on you, the deeper you go into the season. The further you go into it undefeated, the harder it is.

"To lose that [to Orem] and come back and have a good day of work on Thursday, I think we're going in the right direction." —
