Provo • Softball player Kacie Allman was transported by ambulance after suffering a laceration on her kidney following a collision with a Provo High School teammate on Tuesday. Since stabilized from critical condition, she remains in intensive care at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

Allman, a junior, is a three-year starter for the Bulldogs' program as the leadoff hitter and shortstop. The injury occurred against Wasatch, when Allman pursued a fly ball into left field.

She collided with her teammate, whose knee struck Allman's kidney.

Medical personnel discovered air pockets underneath her abdomen, which they originally believed were from the intestine or stomach wall, according to Allman's father, Shane Allman.

New results obtained Wednesday afternoon show the air pockets have since drained.

"The last 12 to 14 hours have been really sketchy," Shane Allman said. "They've been waiting to see whether to operate and find the hole, or if it would just fix itself."

Allman's kidney continues to display signs of dysfunction, however, which could potentially lead to its removal.

"She's in quite a bit of pain right now," Shane said. "They're giving her a lot of pain medication. We're watching that kidney, hoping it'll survive, I guess, is the best way to put it."

Allman will remain under medical watch for a minimum of six to seven days, and will miss at least six months of athletic competition.

"They're bummed out," Provo coach Jose Ventura said. "The girl that actually collided with her was pretty upset. They're really down. It was a very scary situation."

Provo (6-3) was already short-handed, and now has three starters out indefinitely with various injuries.

"She's played every position we've asked," Ventura said of Allman. "That's going to be a tough player to replace. When it rains, it pours, and it's pouring down this way."
