Utah's senior gymnasts are known as one of those special classes, athletes who have led their team in the scoring and in the locker room.

Fitting, then, that they celebrated their final regular-season home meet in the Huntsman Center with one of the most memorable nights Utah's storied gymnastics program has had.

The fourth-ranked Utes (11-0, 7-0) remained undefeated by downing No. 5 Michigan 198.25-197.675 in front of 16,019 fans.

The score was the third-highest in school history and the best this season.

The attendance mark not only was the most to watch a Utah gymnastics team, but also any event in the Huntsman Center.

The previous high for the building was 15,755 for a Utah-BYU basketball game in 1993.

Even though the fire marshal did a walk-through before Friday's meet and determined 16,333 could fit into the building, the Utes still had to turn fans away.

Those who couldn't get in were given upper bowl tickets to the Pac-12 championships hosted by the Utes on March 21.

Those who did get in the building saw a team put together a remarkable meet from start to finish.

Utah's seniors — Becky Tutka, Tory Wilson, Corrie Lothrop and Georgia Dabritz — led the team with the highlights.

Dabritz earned a 10 on the uneven bars for her third perfect mark of the season on the event and won the all-around with a 39.7. Lothrop had 9.9s on the vault and uneven bars, Wilson tied her career high in the all-around with a 39.65 and Tutka capped off Utah's win with a 9.925 on the floor.

The big win plus the attendance numbers left the Utes stunned.

"It was everything we could have hoped for for our final home meet," Wilson said. "We wanted to hit everything the way we know we can and just have a lot of fun, and that is what we did."

Utah coach Greg Marsden, who has worked just as hard at making his team a popular one as he has a good one, was speechless over the attendance and the performance.

"We saw numbers that were coming in early this week that we hadn't seen before, so we were nervous about getting everybody in the building," he said. "We were afraid the fire marshal might shut us down, but it's a problem you love to have and it was just a thrilling night."

The Utes had come close to having a performance like Friday's, but hadn't been able to close it out thanks to a few minor mistakes on the floor.

That didn't happen Friday, with Utah totaling a season-best 49.65 on the event, a performance that flowed easily after the Utes posted a season-high of 49.5 on the balance beam.

"Vault and bars were similar performances to what we have been doing," Marsden said. "But beam, that was one great routine after another and really showed what we were capable of doing."

The only scores that have been higher than Friday's was a 198.6 in a win against BYU in 2004 and a 198.425 in a win against the Cougars in 2002.

Give Michigan credit for pushing the Utes to the big score as the Wolverines were unfazed by the crowd and stayed close from start to finish.

It wasn't until after the balance beam, when the Utes went into the final rotation leading 148.6-148.2, that most fans could relax some, knowing the Utes would probably close out the meet on floor.

"Coming into this meet we knew it was going to be a tough competition," Dabritz said. "But we prepared ourselves well throughout the week and went out there and focused on what we could control." —
