Richfield • Green River appeared to be in control of its Class 1A boys quarterfinal game against Panguitch, but the Bobcats hung around just enough to keep things interesting.

And that's why the Pirates needed a basket by TJ Hughes with 14.3 seconds to play to survive 48-47 on Thursday afternoon.

Panguitch took its first lead of the game with 34 seconds left on a basket by Trey Barney, leaving Green River in dire need of a basket, which Hughes provided.

"In my head, I thought I have to make this or it's game (over)," said Hughes, who finished with 25 points and eight rebounds. "Keeping my cool. That was the main thing. You've got to keep your team cool and keep yourself cool."

Green River used a 9-0 start and a big rebounding advantage to lead most of the way against Panguitch, which finished second a year ago. But Dason Houston and Barney rallied Panguitch in the fourth quarter to give the Bobcats a chance to advance.

"A good team like that doesn't go away so you have to play the whole game against them," said Green River coach Tom Hughes, who credited the job Chance Pfander did defensively on Barney as a big reason his team won. "Our kids have a lot of character."

Bryce Valley, the fifth-place team from Region 20 that needed a play-in game Tuesday to get into the 1A tournament, became the Cinderella team by knocking off Tabiona 57-44..

The Tigers rallied to within three points midway through the third quarter but the Mustangs' Landyn Brinkerhoff got hot to secure the upset and earn the right to play Green River Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Brinkerhoff scored 21 points while Luke Brannon, one of only two seniors on the team, scored 18 and Kix Roundy added 11 with 12 rebounds.

Bailey Hogan scored 14 and Tyler Van Tassell 12 for Tabiona, which committed 18 fouls to Bryce Valley's five.

Can Bryce Valley keep winning despite having to play an extra game Tuesday?

"Being honest, we train hard," said Mustang coach Gary Syrett, who credited his team's rebounding and defense for the win. "I hope the energy of the moment takes you through those games, but it might be a factor."

Defending champion Monticello used 14 points from Sheldon Black and 10 from Matthew Freestone to earn a hard-fought 49-35 win over Tintic.

The Miners, led by Corbin Fitzgerald and Kenny Wall, stayed close for three quarters.

Monticello coach Tony Esplin said his team's experience in winning the title a year ago helped preserve the win.

"Our goal is to force mistakes on the other end and play solid ourselves," he said. "Our kids did a good job with that."

Top-ranked Rich used a stifling man-to-man defense to earn a victory and a semifinal matchup with second-ranked and defending champion Monticello Friday at 6 p.m. at Richfield's Sevier Valley Center.

The Rebels, trying to win both the football and basketball titles under coach Ashley Brown, never could quite put away the Badgers. But good late free throw shooting and a 23-point effort by Wyatt Muirbrook proved too tough for Wayne to handle.

"We did a great job of team defense," said Brown. "Everybody helped each other. We defended the three-point line. We controlled their guards and did a pretty good job on the inside game. Each step is a little tougher. We knew this game would be tougher than last night."
