Richfield • Chasing Delta down the rabbit hole is a pretty tiresome task. Between their no-nonsense tempo and the constant barrage of off-ball screens, opposing teams steadily drain the gas tank as the game progresses.

North Summit was the latest victim to have its energy evaporate. In a tie ballgame entering the third quarter, Delta took advantage of its superior conditioning — running the fast break and relentlessly scrambling in its motion-based offense — to blow past the Braves, 55-34, in the Class 2A girls' quarterfinals at the Sevier Valley Center on Thursday.

"Hopefully we have some legs for tomorrow," quipped Delta coach Kurtis Topham, whose team snapped the Braves' 11-game win streak to improve to 19-3.

Dani Finlinson provided the Rabbits with a temporary advantage with five minutes remaining until intermission, but North Summit's sharpshooter, Haylee McQueen, immediately responded with a 3-ball of her own. The programs, which both entered with 18-3 records, exchanged buckets to even up at 25 apiece at the break.

"We talk about finishing all the time," Topham said of the halftime message. "We had a stretch where we didn't finish games very well. We talked about going out and rebounding, and we felt like we were deep enough."

Delta opened the second half on a 7-0 spurt punctuated by Miranda Petersen's 3-pointer created on one of Delta's 11 second-chance opportunities. The Rabbits controlled the glass, 36-24.

"We thought if we could rebound and hold them to one shot attempt, we'd have a chance," Topham said.

Aggressively outworking North Summit, Delta fought for every scrap. The Rabbits corralled four offensive rebounds before Harlee Willoughby's two free throws blossomed their lead to 40-27 with 2:26 remaining in the third quarter.

After hitting a jumper at the horn, Delta won the third quarter, 20-2, for a commanding 18-point lead heading into the final minutes, where it would contently milk the clock.
