Utah State's Chari Hawkins wasted little time setting a new standard at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday as she broke her own school and conference meet record to win the pentathlon for the second straight season.

Hawkins finished with 4,194 points in the meet held at the Albuquerque Convention Center, helping the Aggies stand second with 10 points behind New Mexico (12 points) after the first day of competition.

Hawkins' effort ranks as the eighth-best score in the nation, breaking the mark of 4,173 she set last year. Hawkish won the 60m hurdles (8.39), the high jump (1.78/5-10.0) and the long jump with a personal best of 6.02m, which also ranked third in school history.

She also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 11.52m and seventh in the 80m with a personal best time of 2:28.25.

For the men, sophomore Bradford Stobell completed four of the seven events in the heptathlon with personal bests in the long jump (6.75m/22-01.75) and the shot put (9.73m/31-11.25).

The action continues on Friday with the heptathlon at 11 a.m. and the field event finals at 12:30 p.m.
