Richfield • Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were nowhere to be found, and San Juan looked nothing like the "Monstars," but Manti's third-quarter performance felt an awful lot like "Space Jam."

In the 1996 film, the "Tune Squad" wakes up after Michael Jordan provides his "Secret Stuff" (which, as it turned out, was simply water) at halftime. The Templars must have drunk the same stuff. After being tied at intermission, Region 16's top seed outscored the Broncos 30-9 in the third quarter en route to a convincing 76-59 win in the Class 2A quarterfinals at the Sevier Valley Center on Thursday.

"I knew it was in there, it was just a matter of time before it came out, and it all came out at once," Manti coach Devin Shakespear said. "We made a few adjustments, but honestly they did a great job of coming out and giving great energy in the third quarter."

Shakespear attributed the run to Manti limiting San Juan (9-12) to one-shot possessions by corralling defensive rebounds. The Templars finished with a 33-24 advantage on the glass, including nearly doubling up the defensive boards, 23-12.

"If we can't secure the first miss, it slows everything down for us," said Shakespear, whose team plays to the run-and-gun tempo. "Third quarter, I don't know if we gave up more than one or two offensive rebounds."

Thomas Allred (17 points), Derek Wright (16), Connor Bolles (11) and Stuart Lott (11) all finished in double figures for Manti, which also reached its season average of 18 assists. The Templars (18-6), who suffered first-round exits the past two seasons, have now won 12 of their last 13 outings, including seven straight.

"It's a huge advantage because we've had four in double figures the last six or eight games, and it's been a different four," Shakespear explained. "Tonight we were focused a lot on [San Juan's DiQuan] Lopez. When teams play us, it's a lot harder to focus on one."
