Richfield • After trailing by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter, a four-point play by Emery's Dillon Wilstead whittled the Spartans' deficit to one.

Of course, then Summit Academy's Danny Figueroa padded the cushion with two freebies, and Emery needed another miracle.

As the defense converged on Wilstead, the senior leader found Bowdie Jacobson hibernating on the wing. With 3.5 seconds remaining, the sophomore banked an off-balanced 3-pointer off the glass to force overtime, ultimately propelling the Spartans to the Class 2A boys' hoops semifinals with a 78-73 victory.

"I just threw it up," Jacobson said. "It was unbelievable."

Summit Academy, which was attempting to earn its first semifinal appearance in the school's three-year history, maintained control until midway through the fourth quarter, when its frazzled play — rushed shots, turnovers, fouling in the bonus — steadily allowed Emery to crawl back.

"There were so many opportunities where our guys could have hung their head," Emery coach Todd Jeffs said. "I credit our guys. They kept chipping away, and things worked out for us. I mean, we had some luck."

Behind 6-foot-5 Sam Velez and Zach Scott, who is generously listed at 6-9, Summit Academy dictated the paint, specifically during the third quarter when it built its double-digit lead. But when Scott (13 points, nine rebounds) fouled out with 3:37 remaining, Emery began to fight back. Tyson Roper (14 points, six boards) cleaned up the garbage, hitting 8 of 10 free-throw attempts and creating several second-chance opportunities.

"As the game wore on, we got a few extra chances," Jeffs said. "Down the wire, I thought it was a free-for-all. I didn't think the refs were calling anything; I mean it was a madhouse."

The Spartans charged to 73-66 lead in overtime before Tyler Farris (22 points) hit one of his three 3-pointers for the Bears. He'd get another opportunity in the waning seconds after Emery errantly threw the inbounds pass away, leading to a wide-open attempt to potentially even up, but the triple rimmed out.

"All-around crazy," said Wilstead, who finished with 15 points and four assists. "When we were down, I knew if we got it going we could come back. We had the momentum. We just had to take care of the ball."
