Ogden • There were times when Orem looked as if it knew everything Timpview was doing, as the Golden Tigers took a surprisingly easy 62-48 victory in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A basketball tournament Thursday.

There was probably a reason for that.

Former Timpview head coach Perry Wildeboer, who was forced out two years ago despite winning three state titles and compiling a 240-79 record and still teaches at the Provo school, began assisting Orem head coach Golden Holt this year.

"Playing Timpview twice in one year is not what I expected," said Wildeboer, whom Holt asked to talk to the media in his place. "We are not in their region. Beating them both times was not an easy task. And I had mixed emotions about it. Those are also my guys. They have been going to my camp since they were in third grade. It's like beating my brother."

Orem simply dominated this game. The Golden Tigers built up a 25-15 lead at half and then went on a tear in the third quarter. At one point late in the fourth quarter, the Region 7 co-champions led by 28 over obviously frustrated Timpview.

This was a rough game that at times bordered on being out of control. Fouls, including a couple of the flagrant variety in the second half, were plentiful, as three Thunderbirds fouled out.

Holt pulled many of his starters late in the game and the Thunderbirds rallied behind University of Utah football commit Britain Covey, who finished his prep basketball career with 18 points.

Orem got big games from all of its starters, who had some fine moments as the Golden Tigers held normally hot-shooting Timpview to 39.5 percent from the field and 27.8 percent behind the line. Wilhelm Clark finished with 20 points, three steals, and four rebounds. Hayden Young added 19 points. And big man and UVU commit Richard Harward had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Orem, which also has a number of veteran coaches who have come out of retirement to help Holt besides Wildeboer, will no doubt face a tougher task in Friday's semifinals.
