Ogden • The recipe was simple: Caleb Leonhardt in the first half, Jesse Wade in the second. The result was a berth in the semifinals.

The Davis duo combined to score 44 points and lead the Darts to a 74-63 victory against Pleasant Grove in the Class 5A quarterfinals Wednesday night.

"We came out with a defensive mindset," said Leonhardt, who scored 14 of his 21 points in the first half. "Defense first, and offense would take care of itself. It was awesome. It was so fun."

Davis (20-3) advanced to meet Brighton in Friday's semifinal. The Darts' victory capped a stellar day for Region 1 teams, following victories by Layton and Viewmont that evening.

"Go Region 1. Go Region 1," Davis coach Chad Sims said. "Our region is really tough, and it's really nice to see those teams reach the semifinals."

Wade, scoreless for the game's first 12½ minutes, scored 15 points in the fourth quarter — 13 on free throws — to maintain a safe distance against last year's runner-up.

The senior guard finished with a game-high 23 points, but took a scary spill midway through the fourth quarter and landed on his right wrist. Though it didn't affect his free-throw shooting, he did appear to be favoring it in the final seconds and had an ice pack on after the game.

"He's a competitor," Sims said. "I wasn't worried about it. I trusted him when he said he was ready to go back in."

Davis, the lone remaining region champion in the tournament, turned a four-point deficit into a 36-29 with a flurry of steals and layups in the final four minutes of the first half. Leonhardt scored the Darts' final six points before the break as Wade drew most of the Pleasant Grove defensive attention.

"Anybody on this team could have done it," said Leonhardt, who made 5 of 6 3-point attempts. "It was a fun game for me. [Pleasant Grove] did a great job on [Wade]."

Pleasant Grove (19-6) got 21 points from Riley Court, but the Vikings couldn't get closer than within nine points in the fourth quarter.

But the Vikings were done in by some poor ball handling. Their 16 turnovers — 11 in the second half — led to 24 Davis points. —
