Ogden • Timpview delivered an avalanche of points that defied the laws of shooting, defied its coach's instructions, and essentially ended Sky View's season.

The Thunderbirds made 8 of 9 3-pointers in the first half and cruised to an 83-53 victory in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament Tuesday night.

The T-Birds were so hot, they went against coach Kevin Santiago's instructions to hold for one final shot with 45 seconds left in the second quarter.

Instead, Gabe Reid connected on a 3-pointer from the left corner and, after a Bobcats turnover, Britain Covey ended the half with a jumper to cap a furious 31-7 run for a 41-21 lead.

"That's one of those things where you're calling 'One shot! One shot' and he shoots it and you just go 'Yeah! Perfect! That's what we want,' " Santiago joked. "Our guys played with confidence."

Timpview (14-8) advanced out of the first round for the first time since it won the 2010 state title and will meet Orem in Thursday's quarterfinals.

Reid scored 14 points and Covey, Gavin Baxter and A.J. Bollinger each added 12 points for Timpview, which shot 84 percent from the field in the first half and finished at 72 percent for the game.

"We wanted to bring energy and that's what we did," Reid said. "Once we picked our defense, we started hitting shots. I credit it to our defense."

Sky View (13-10) played short-handed, as top 3-point shooter Jake Hendricks watched from the bench with his right foot in a walking boot. But there was little the junior could have done against the T-Birds' hot hands.

Eight players accounted for Timpview's 12 3-pointers.

The rout capped an otherwise compelling first round that saw two double-overtime games and another won by defending champion Bountiful on a buzzer-beater.

But Reid would have taken a win by any score, considering it's the first state tournament success for him and fellow seniors Covey and Devin Kaufusi.

"We've been gunning to get past the first round," Reid said. "To get past the first round is huge for us, but our goal is the state championship. That's what we're working to." —
