Ogden • Golden Holt has always coached the "high-flyers" during his incumbency as the headman at Orem. Richard Harward is no such player, and in many ways his style of physical force represents the character of this entire group of Tigers.

In the first round of the Class 4A boys' tournament at the Dee Events Center on Tuesday night, Harward bullied his way to 16 points and five rebounds as Orem powered through Highland, 50-42, into its second consecutive quarterfinal appearance.

"This team is different than any team I've had at Orem. It was workmanlike [tonight]. Was it a thing of beauty? No," Holt explained. "You're not scoring 70 points in tournament basketball, so we're built for this."

Although Harward's statistics reflected a solid effort, Holt didn't feel it was the 6-foot-10 senior center's best performance, specifically critiquing two offensive foul calls he felt were questionable.

"I told the referee, 'You know you could hit Richard in the back with a two-by-four and he wouldn't move. Is that a foul?'" Holt said. "Richard is a big boy, and he takes a lot of physical play down there. Tonight he got two offensive calls, and I think bigs need a little bit more respect."

Highland's Brevin Elsholz's 3-pointer just inside the one-minute mark in the second quarter sliced the Rams' deficit to 25-22 at halftime. Will Clark— who finished with 14 points and nine boards — and Harward scored all 10 second-quarter points for the Tigers.

Hayden Young's bucket with three minutes remaining in the third quarter padded the Tigers' lead at 37-27, the largest of the evening. Young transferred to Orem from Mountain View, where he nailed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in last year's first round, after his family relocated in the boundaries.

"I thought he was our tough guy. He had a little attitude," Holt said of Young, who filled the scorebook with eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. "Hayden has been there before, and that showed tonight."

Highland kept within striking distance, eventually closing the gap to 44-40 when Brandon Warr, who bucketed a game-high 19 points with 11 rebounds, connected on two free throws. But Orem calmly broke the ensuing half-court trap — which Holt previous lectured procedure on during a full timeout with five minutes left after the Tigers' sloppy execution against 1-3-1 — that left Harward all by his lonesome to flush a two-handed slam.
