Ogden • Olympus coach Matt Barnes aptly summarized his team's thrilling double-overtime 56-49 victory over East that opened the Class 4A boys' basketball tournament Tuesday morning.

"It's great when you win and it kills you when you lose," said the hoarse coach, whose co-Region 7 champions survived several scares to stave off the upset-minded Leopards.

East's Dacian Spotted Elk hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer of regulation to force the first overtime, and Olympus survived a scare when the Leopards barely missed another 3-point buzzer-beater at the end of the first overtime.

The Titans also overcame a rare off-night by star guard Jake Lindsey, who admitted post-game that "I didn't finish layups. It was not a great performance on my part. I was pretty upset with myself, but my teammates kept trusting me."

Barnes singled out Miles Keller, whose two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and two layups in the second overtime were huge, and little-used senior Dominic Cervantez, who hit a pair of big fourth-quarter free throws and grabbed some important rebounds, for particular praise. Isaac Monson also had 12 points.

Lindsey, who was 6 of 26 from the field and obviously bothered by East's 7-foot-2 Mark Jackson, hit three free throws in the first overtime and four more in the second to finish with 21 points.

"They played great," Lindsey said about East. "That big guy is a load in there. They had a great gameplan."

It speaks highly of Region 6 that East, a team with an 11-10 record coming into the tournament, was a third-place team.

Spotted Elk finished with 22 points. Jackson had 14 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks. And the Leopards played great team defense.

The game was tight all the way. Olympus held an eight-point lead late in the first half and East led by as many as five. Every time the Titans made a run, the Leopards answered.

"I'm proud of my kids for hanging in there, battling and making the stop when the game was on the line," said Barnes. "To be a good team, you have to win these things, make a run and find a way to make those stops when the game is on the line. We found a way to do that."

As a result, Olympus survived a scare in a game that Barnes hopes toughened the Titans up for their next game.
