Taylorsville • Patience was the key for Timpview on Tuesday night in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament.

Patience on defense, as Logan made pass after pass after pass in search of the perfect shot. Patience on offense against the Grizzlies zone, which finally broke down in the second half.

Lyndie Haddock scored a game-high 20 points and the Thunderbirds advances with a grind-it-out 35-22 victory. Timpview (15-6) advanced to play Skyline in Thursday's quarterfinals.

"It's different than anything we've played before," Haddock said of the pass-happy Logan offense. "They are a very slow offensive team and our team is used to playing fast offensive teams. It took us a little time to adjust to it."

The teams combined to shoot 8 for 43 in a first half that ended in a 9-9 tie.

In the second half, Timpview worked the ball to Haddock, who found holes in the zone and finished many of the close-range shots that didn't fall early in the game.

Lacy Haddock added eight points for Timpview, which finished 12 for 41 from the field. Logan (14-9) shot just 10 of 48, but the Grizzlies hung close through three quarters largely because of 11 offensive rebounds.

"In the first half we were impatient and soft defensively, which fed into what they wanted to do," Timpview coach Justin Snell said. "Second half, we were a lot more aggressive. Offensively, we tried to create driving lanes for Lyndie.

"Lyndie did a fantastic job in the second half."

Kayle Hugie had six points for the Grizzlies, who fell to 0-5 in the state tournament since moving to Class 4A in 2008. The school's last tournament win was in the 2007 3A tournament.

Lyndie Haddock used her size against Hugie and any other defender Logan threw at her. During one stretch spanning the second and third quarters, the senior scored 17 of Timpview's 19 points.

She said after the game she and her sister rely on their success in volleyball to help them stay steady in pressure situations.

"Having been in those state championship games, and winning them, I know what it's like have emotions run high," said Haddock, who was a member of Timpview's back-to-back state volleyball championship teams. "I've resorted to being pretty calm about it, and that's to our advantage." —
