Seattle • As good as Utah's gymnastics team feels about its gymnastics performances in recent weeks, the Utes only have to look around the country to realize they aren't the only ones posting big scores.

Top-ranked Oklahoma beat Iowa State 198.15-195.675 on Friday and LSU took a 198.075-196.85 win at Georgia.

Florida, like Utah, has also flirted with breaking the 198 mark.

Mindful of what their competition is doing, the Utes say they have no illusions that they can afford to back off now, which is why they view Saturday's meet at Washington as being key to the rest of their season.

"We can be at an even higher level," senior Georgia Dabritz said. "Every day we are showing up in the gym, working hard and it is showing up in our performances."

Marsden cautioned against comparing the Utes' scores to the other teams, knowing scoring can be subjective and the scores tend to be higher in the East.

"We need to keep doing what we have been doing the last two weeks, which is eliminating mistakes and some of the deductions on landings," he said. "If we focus on that, our scores are going to improve anyway."

Nevertheless, breaking the 198 mark is a point of pride for gymnastics teams, so don't believe for a second the Utes haven't taken notice of what other teams have done.

"Oklahoma is a great team week in and week out and LSU is having a breakout season," Marsden said. "If we want to keep up with those schools we have to keep improving."

Encouraging to the Utes has been their performances on the road.

Utah was solid in the opener at BYU and had the breakout performance at Arizona. Since the NCAA Championships are in Texas, Marsden likes what he is seeing in the team when it is away from the Huntsman Center.

"Competing on the road isn't as much fun in some ways because you have to create your own energy," he said. "You are in your own bubble and that can be hard but it can be much more rewarding too because of that." —
