Provo • Tyler Haws went to the bench with his second foul less than seven minutes into Thursday night's game, but the BYU Cougars didn't panic.

Instead, they got a bigger lead.

Haws left with just six points and BYU leading 16-8 with 13:39 remaining. The Cougars promptly went on a 17-6 run against the Saint Mary's Gaels, playing some of their best basketball of the season.

Kyle Collinsworth picked up the scoring slack in Haws' absence and finished the half with 14 points, five rebounds and an assist.

The Cougars' first three baskets were 3-pointers, and they were 6 of 10 from 3-point range in the first half.

The Gaels ended the half on a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 42-30 at the break.

Brad Waldow heated up as the half went on and had eight points and three rebounds.

Austin out for season

BYU coach Dave Rose said Wednesday that senior center Nate Austin (hamstring) will not return to action this season. Austin hasn't played since injuring his hamstring on Dec. 10 before the Utah game.

"We had a conversation yesterday, and he doesn't feel like it is healed," Rose said. "It wouldn't be 100 percent, and a couple of weeks ago, he was excited to get back and try to help the team. In the three days we were gone on the trip, he did a lot of individual work and really pushed it, and was really sore on Sunday and Monday. He just feels like it is not going to work.

We will look into trying to see if there is a possibility we can get his year back."

Winder sits again

Having strained a groin in the loss at Pepperdine on Feb. 5, senior guard Anson Winder did not play on Thursday night against Saint Mary's. Winder played six minutes last Saturday in the win over Loyola Marymount, but scored just two points, a season-low.

Winder also missed the previous game against Saint Mary's on Jan. 17, but with a bruised knee. He missed the game before that, at Pacific, then returned to score nine points in 35 minutes against San Diego.

Winder is BYU's No. 2 scorer, with a 14.0 average.

Briefly

Senior guard Aaron Bright did not start for the Gaels, but entered the game in the first half. Bright is the team's third-leading scorer, with a 10.6 average. Freshman Emmett Naar started in his place. … Freshman Corbin Kaufusi started at center for BYU and quickly blocked a shot. However, he picked up a foul moments later and was replaced by sophomore Luke Worthington. ... Officials for the game were Michael Reed, Michael Irving and Tommy Nunez.
