Sandy • With shots not falling and a potential region title on the line, Alta got a lift from an unlikely source Tuesday night.

Senior Madison Mitchell reached double figures for just the second time in her career and made two baseline jumpers in the fourth quarter to help Alta hold off Copper Hills 59-48 and secure a share of the Region 3 title.

"I was just excited to play it out with the other seniors," said Mitchell, one of four Alta seniors to start the game. "It was a night to give it my all with no regrets. It'll be a good way to remember the season."

Fellow senior Elsa Ferre scored a game-high 19 points for the Hawks (16-7, 8-2), who will be the region's second seed and open the Class 5A State tournament Monday against either Lone Peak or Westlake.

Brighton swept two meetings with Alta and will be the No. 1 seed.

"Madi Mitchell stepped up tonight and played great," Alta coach Sean Yeager said. "She hit some tough shots and got some big rebounds. She was playing physical — the most physical I've seen her play. Without her we wouldn't have won the game."

Mitchell also started a game-changing scoring run before halftime. Her jumper began an 11-2 stretch that included two Ferre 3-pointers and a 3-pointer from senior Brandy Bookout — all from the right wing.

"I just go where I'm open, and I was open right there," Ferre said. "We just wanted to stay focused. Sometimes we go through ups and downs and we needed to pull out of it there."

That burst erased a brief deficit and pushed Alta ahead 37-26 at halftime. The lead never dropped below six points the rest of the way.

Shirsten Wissinger had 16 points for the Grizzlies, who would have been the region's top seed with a win. Instead, Copper Hills falls to the No. 3 seed and will face either Riverton or American Fork in the state tournament. —
