Two days after picking up his 250th career win, BYU basketball coach Dave Rose signed a new five-year contract on Monday that will take him through the 2019-20 season.

Rose, 57, is in his 10th season as BYU's head coach. He has the highest winning percentage (.744) in school history and is second to Hall of Fame coach Stan Watts in total wins, having compiled a 250-86 record. The new deal replaces a five-year contract he signed in April 2011 after taking his team to the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16 that would have taken him through the 2015-16 season.

Despite using 10 different starting lineups this season due to an unusually high number of illnesses and injuries to key players, Rose has coached the Cougars into a tie for third place in the West Coast Conference with an 8-5 league record, 18-8 overall.

"I am excited about the future of BYU basketball," Rose said in a school news release. Athletic administrators "Tom Holmoe, Brian Santiago and the university administration have provided great support and I look forward to the things we can accomplish together over the next several years. We have great student-athletes and coaches at BYU who are committed to the success of our program."

Rose has battled through two bouts with cancer, in 2009 and 2013, after cancerous tumors were discovered on his pancreas. He undergoes scans every six months, and told The Salt Lake Tribune last fall that his latest scan was cancer-free and he felt fine entering his 10th season.

Rose has coached BYU to nine straight 20-win seasons and six 25-win seasons. His teams have made the NCAA Tournament seven times and NIT two times in his nine completed seasons.

"I appreciate all that Dave has accomplished over the past decade as head coach of our men's basketball program. He is an incredible leader and one of the best coaches in the country," said Holmoe, BYU's athletic director. "Dave does things the right way, on and off the court. We are excited about the future of the basketball program."

Rose began developing his attacking, uptempo offensive style as a member of Houston's famed Phi Slamma Jamma teams in the 1980s and carried it through his time as a prep coach at Millard High and a junior college coach at Dixie College in St. George. BYU is currently scoring 84.9 points per game, which leads the nation.
