The No. 7-ranked BYU men's volleyball picked up its second sweep of the weekend over UC San Diego on Saturday night at the Smith Fieldhouse.

BYU's Price Jarman recorded a career-high six blocks, and Matt Underwood had five as the Cougars prevailed 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.

The match marked coach Chris McGown's 100th leading BYU and his 77th victory. BYU (6-2, 5-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) improved its overall record against UCSD (1-8, 0-6 MPSF) to 38-0 and stretched its home winning streak to 32.

Skiing

Utah's Veronika Mayerhofer won the women's 5-kilometer freestyle cross-country race in 38 minutes, 10.7 seconds at the New Mexico Invitational in Red River, and the Utes finished third in the team standings.

In men's Nordic, NoƩ Bellet led Utah with a season-high fourth-place finish in the 10-km freestyle.

Utah finished behind meet winner New Mexico (579) and second-place Colorado (551) with 505.5 points. Denver (502) and Alaska-Anchorage (470.5) rounded out the top five.

Tennis

The Utah men's tennis team notched a pair of victories on Saturday, beating Montana State 5-2 and topping Utah State 6-1.

Utah's Cedric Willems defeated Montana State's Andre Napoliatano 6-4, 6-2 in No. 1 singles in the early match.

In the night match, the Utes handed the Aggies their first loss of the season. Utah's Slim Hamza defeated Jack Swindells 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. The Aggies scored their only victory at No. 2 doubles, with Swindells and Matt Sweet beating Hamza and Freddie McGeehan, 6-2.

Track and field

Utah State athletes set two school records at the New Mexico Team Invitational in Albuquerque.

Senior Sam Nielson set the USU women's record in winning the triple jump with a mark of 12.85 meters.

The Aggie men's 1,600-meter relay team (freshman Clay Lambourne, junior Tanner Hunt, junior Cole Lambourne and junior Parker Bluth) set a school record with its third-place time of 3 minutes, 11.15 seconds.

Lambourne also won an individual title with a personal-best time of 46.75 to win the 400 meters, which ranks as the second-fastest time in school history.

The Utah State women finished eighth out of 10 teams, while the men finished seventh out of 10 teams.• Utah's Aoife Hickey won the weight throw at the Mountain State Games in Pocatello, Idaho, with a mark of 17.38 meters, and teammate Ilse Kaaja (16.55) placed third.

• At the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Utah's Rhianna Williams won the women's 400 meters with a personal-best time of 55.18 seconds.

Swimming

The BYU men's and women's swimming teams beat Grand Canyon at the Richards Building Pool in their last home meet of the season.

For the women it came down to the last event of the meet. Heading into the 200-yard freestyle relay, BYU led Grand Canyon by three points, with the winner of the relay taking the meet. Ciera Marsh Keller, Alora Foliaki, Alexandria Sorensen and Andrea Grant Richards finished in a tie with Grand Canyon for first with a time of 1 minute, 36.74 seconds. The tie was good enough for the women to hold on to win 131.5 to 130.5.

In the men's competition, BYU junior captain Jake Taylor finished first and set a new pool record with a 47.99 in the men's 100-yard backstroke, and the Cougars cruised to a 159-103 victory.

Wrestling

Stanford 28, Utah Valley 6 • In Orem, UVU's Chasen Tolbert scored an upset victory at 125 pounds, defeating Stanford's Evan Silver (ranked No. 15 in the country) by a 3-0 decision, but the Wolverines lost eight of 10 matches to the Cardinal. Freshman Matthew Ontiveros notched the Wolverines' other victory, defeating Mason Penfilly 4-0 at 141 pounds.

Women's volleyball

Southern Utah hired coach Craig Choate, who guided Snow College to a 20-7 record this season. Choate has extensive Division I experience. Before Snow College, he coached at Northern Arizona. He compiled a record of 244-191 as head coach at San Jose State over 14 years.

Choate played club volleyball at BYU, graduating in 1978.
