Provo • American Fork is done playing second fiddle. After falling 16 times in the previous 17 games by an average margin of 17 points against their archrival Lone Peak, the Cavemen finally got the job done.

Behind a masterful performance at the free-throw line, connecting on 25 of 27 attempts, and 33 points from Spencer Johnson, American Fork knocked off the top-ranked Knights, 77-73, in double overtime at the Marriott Center on Friday evening.

"A little bit of a monkey on our back with that team," said American Fork coach Doug Meacham. "I feel like a lot is off their shoulders now. I'm proud at the end, they felt like they were supposed to win."

Johnson scored 11 of American Fork's 15 points in the two extra periods after Dallin Harley fouled out with 19 points in the first overtime. No other Caveman eclipsed double figures.

Lone Peak's superstar Frank Jackson scored 34 points, but was held scoreless after regulation. He fouled out with three minutes left in the second overtime. Christian PoPoola added 20 points, and Nick Curtis finished with 13.

Crashing the offensive glass with authority, Lone Peak capitalized on 24 offensive rebounds to make amends for its poor shooting at the line, hitting only 25 for 37, including missing seven straight at one juncture.

"I know what our next practice is going to be about: rebounding," Meacham said.

Consecutive 3s from Johnson furnished a 45-41 lead with one minute in the third. He ended the quarter with a wicked no-look dish to Cameron Poulton for an easy bucket and a 49-44 lead with eight minutes remaining.

"I'm proud of the way Spencer wanted the ball in his hands," Meacham said. "That tells you what kind of kid he is."

Lone Peak opened the fourth on a 9-3 run, and with one minute remaining in regulation, Jackson buried a triple off an on-ball screen to pull even at 60 apiece. After Jackson and Johnson exchanged freebies, Lone Peak's Tyson Doman drew a charging foul with 3.1 seconds before Jackson's desperation heave fell wayward, preserving the 62-62 deadlock.

Johnson and PoPoola each scored four points in the first overtime, and Brendan Bailey's baseline look rimmed out at the buzzer. Bailey finished with six points.

Jackson's fifth foul allowed Brayden Harris to calmly sink his first two points at the line for a 70-68 lead. Poulton added two free throws before Johnson closed the second overtime with seven points.

"It's as good of free-throw shooting team as I've had," Meacham said. "That's kind of fun at the end of the game when you can say, 'Take care of it, and we'll win.' "

American Fork (9-5, 3-0) is the only remaining unbeaten team in Region 4, and returns to action Tuesday against Herriman. Lone Peak (11-4, 3-1), which lost in Utah for the first time this season, is off until Friday against Pleasant Grove.
