Draper • After scoring 100 points to dominate Union on Tuesday, the unbeaten and top-ranked Juan Diego girls' basketball team needed a bit of a challenge.

Morgan provided one for exactly a half before the Soaring Eagle and the magnificent Mills twins showed why they might be the best girls team in any classification this season.

Juan Diego outscored Morgan 43-28 in the second half to capture a 75-55 victory in what will likely be the Soaring Eagle's biggest test until running into some powerful southern Utah teams next month in the Class 3A state tournament at Maverik Center.

Domonique Mills scored 25, her sister Monique added 24 and junior Ann Nelson notched 10 for the Soaring Eagle.

The Mills sisters do much more than just score. In fact, on Friday night, their shooting was the least impressive part of their game. They both are strong shot blockers, ball hawks and rebounders and appear capable of turning a game around quickly.

"That was a very impressive second half," said Juan Diego coach Josh Archuleta. "We finally got the ball moving and got some deflections, but that first half had me scared."

Four of Juan Diego's past five wins have been as easy as the win at Union earlier in the week. So when Morgan hung around to trail by only five at halftime, it was a bit of a wake-up call.

"We kind of needed that jump," Archuleta said. "They [Juan Diego's players] were kind of stuttering, a little sluggish in the first half. But we figured out that as bad as we played, we still led by five points at the half."

Morgan, which got 16 points from Jessica Carter before she went out with what looked like a serious knee injury midway through the third quarter, has been among the top 3A teams the past few seasons.

The Trojans managed just six free throws and one basket in the decisive third quarter, when the Mills sisters scored all but five of their team's 21 points.

Juan Diego built leads of as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter to remain unbeaten.

"It's always been Juan Diego and Morgan in our league," Archuleta said. "I have no doubt that when we go to their house, they will be second place in our league."

For now, nobody appears ready to challenge Juan Diego. —
