Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham confirmed Monday that backup quarterback Adam Schulz, who will be a senior next fall, is transferring to Houston.

Schulz hails from Muskego, Wis. and walked on at the U. before earning a scholarship. He played in eight games and started three in 2013 after junior Travis Wilson was injured. In 2014, his lone appearance was in the Las Vegas Bowl, when he relieved Wilson and threw for 31 yards

He finished his Utah career 79-of-158 for 1,091 yards and six touchdowns, against five interceptions, and was known for his strong arm. He also rushed 25 times for 78 yards and one touchdown.

Whittingham had said previously that he would be surprised if every quarterback returned to what is still, minus Schulz, a very crowded field.

Besides Wilson and junior Kendal Thompson — Utah's 2014 starters — redshirt freshmen Conner Manning and Brandon Cox, freshman Donovan Isom, sophomore transfer Jason Thompson and returned missionary Chase Hansen (a redshirt freshman to-be) are all expected to begin vying for playing time during spring ball.

At Houston, dual-threat sophomore Greg Ward led the Cougars to an Armed Forces Bowl victory over Pittsburgh after earning extensive playing time in the Cougars' final nine games. Fellow sophomore John O'Korn began the season as starter and passed for 3,117 yards as a freshman, but is thought likely to transfer elsewhere.
