Highland • Until four-time defending 5A champion Lone Peak loses a game to a Utah school, the Knights remain the best boys' basketball team in the state.

But a good Lehi team put a scare into Lone Peak on Friday night before falling 84-72 in an intense and interesting contest.

In the end, Knight star Frank Jackson proved too much for the Pioneers as he poured in 41 points.

When Lehi cut the Lone Peak lead to 75-71 late in the fourth quarter, Jackson simply took over. He scored eight of the next 10 points to secure the victory.

"Lehi is always going to be tough and they are going to give us our best game," said Jackson. "I just have that aggressive mentality to go to the basket and shoot the ball."

Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis praised both Lehi and Jackson.

"Lehi is a good team," he said. "I was not surprised at all. He [Jackson] is tough. Not only is he talented, but he is tough minded too."

Lone Peak needed all that toughness early and late.

Lehi led much of the first quarter behind the play of Tanner Nygren, who scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half. Then the Pioneers' Marcus Draney, who finished with 27, caught fire in the fourth quarter.

The Pioneers trailed 63-49 after three quarters but scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to make a game of it.

Lone Peak got 18 points from Nick Curtis.

"He is tough to stop on the open floor," said Lehi coach Bob Barnes about Jackson. "We know that. When he gets going, it's tough to stop him. But give our guys credit. We battled hard. With a couple of shots and a coupe of possessions down the line, it could have been different." —
