BYU golfer Rhett Rasmussen off to good start in U.S. Amateur

Pebble Beach, Calif. • BYU golfer Rhett Rasmussen of Draper shot a 1-over-par 73 at Spyglass Golf Course in the first round of the U.S. Amateur on Monday, putting him in a tie for 43rd place.

The tournament’s 312 golfers will compete in the second round of stroke play on Tuesday at Spyglass (par 72) and Pebble Beach Golf Links (par 71), with the top 64 advancing to match play.

Rasmussen had the best score among five golfers with Utah ties who qualified for the event.

BYU’s Peter Kuest shot a 74 at Spyglass, putting him in a tie for 73rd place.

Utah Amateur champion Preston Summerhays of Scottsdale, Ariz., shot a 76 at Pebble Beach, putting him in a tie for 166th place.

University of Utah golfer Kyler Dunkle scored 78 at Pebble Beach and sits in a tie for 202nd place.

BYU’s Spencer Dunaway struggled to an 81 at Spyglass (tied for 268th).

Daniel Hillier of New Zealand, and Trevor Phillips of Inman, S.C., sit tied at 4-under par atop the leaderboard. Hillier shot a 67 at Pebble Beach, while Phillips shot a 68 at Spyglass.
