Around the NHL: Simmonds leads Flyers as they double up Oilers

Edmonton, Alberta • Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Wednesday night for their second straight victory after losing 10 in a row.

Jordan Weal, Dale Weise and Michael Raffl also scored, Claude Giroux added two assists, and Brian Elliott made 24 saves.

Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for Edmonton. The Oilers have lost two of three.

Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead on a soft goal with five minutes left in the second period when Weise sent a shot through both the defender’s and goalie Laurent Brossoit’s legs. Raffi made it 3-1 four minutes into the third period.

Edmonton pulled to within one on Nugent-Hopkins’ rebound goal with 6:40 remaining.

Simmonds put it away with an empty-netter with 39 seconds left.

Edmonton opened the scoring four minutes into the second period when Connor McDavid got a backhand pass through to Draisaitl, who beat Elliott for his eighth of the season. Weal tied it five minutes later on a power play.

Capitals 6, Blackhawks 2 • At Washington, Tom Wilson had two goals and two assists and Alex Ovechkin had a goal and three assists in Washington’s victory. Nicklas Backstrom ended a 21-game stretch without a goal and added two assists, and Washington’s top-line trio each scored a goal in the first period when the Capitals opened a 3-0 lead. Backstrom hadn’t scored since Oct. 14 in Philadelphia. Braden Holtby made 37 saves for Washington to help the Capitals win for the sixth time in seven games. Lance Bouma and Jonathan Toews scored for Chicago.

Maple Leafs 2, Flames 1, SO • At Toronto,Frederik Andersen made 47 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped three more shots in a shootout in Toronto’s win over Calgary. William Nylander scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout, deking to the backhand to beat Mike Smith. Morgan Rielly scored in regulation for the Maple Leafs. Toronto improved to 18-10-1 and moved into second place in the Eastern Conference, three points behind Tampa Bay.
