State colleges: Former Utah Ute Malia Nawahine leads BYU women's basketball team over Utah Valley, 74-54

Graduate transfer scores 21 points in Cougars’ victory<br>

Malia Nawahine knocked down five 3-pointers as the BYU women’s basketball beat Utah Valley 75-54 in the UCCU Crosstown Clash on Tuesday afternoon at the Marriott Center in Provo.

Nawahine, a graduate transfer from Utah, finished with 21 points, her highest total as a Cougar. Brenna Chase hit four 3-pointers and had 16 points. Cassie Broadhead Devashrayee recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 assists.

As a team, BYU (3-1) shot 59.2 percent from the field and held the Wolverines (0-4) to 28.1 percent.

Southern Utah 70, Utah State 67 • In Cedar City, Whitney Johnson scored a career-high 20 points and added nine rebounds, Breanu Reid scored 18 points, and Natalie Sanchez added 12 points on 4-for-7 3-point shooting as the Thunderbirds (1-3) notched their first victory of the season.

Olivia West led Utah State (1-3) with 20 points, Rachel Brewster scored 18, and Shannon Dufficy had 12 points and 19 rebounds.

Southern Utah took a 62-56 lead into the fourth quarter and held off the Aggies by going 6 for 6 from the free-throw line down the stretch.

Women’s volleyball

Veronica Jones-Perry and McKenna Miller had 11 kills each as BYU swept Loyola Marymount 25-19, 25-20, 25-16 on Senior Night at Smith Fieldhouse. BYU wrapped up the regular season with a record of 28-2 overall and 17-1 in the West Coast Conference.
