An arm across his nose early in the game left Bingham's Josh Newbold bloodied.

And it would be many minutes on the game clock Friday afternoon before the Miners' 6-foot-8 senior would be able to play without assistance from the team trainer.

But when Newbold was back to normal, he was just what Bingham needed the most in the last moments of the fourth quarter.

Newbold hit a pair of free throws with less than a second left in regulation to force overtime, and the Miners would eventually triumph over Bountiful 79-73 in the extra period.

"I was just thinking, 'Just like in practice.' I'd done this a million times — no bid deal, just step up and shoot 'em," said Newbold, who finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. "After that first one went in, my confidence went way up."

"I actually thought he'd make 'em, I really did," Bingham coach Jake Schroeder said. "Josh is a fun kid, one of the most popular kids here at the school. He's a little bit goofy at times, and that's kind of why I thought he'd make it.

"I don't think he realized how big those shots were," Schroeder added. "And that's what makes him special."

In the overtime period, a pair of fast-break layups from Kyle Gearig gave Bingham (10-2) a little breathing room — pushing a one-point lead up to five. An answer shot from the Braves' Zac Seljaas made the score 71-68, but a baseline jumper from Newbold kicked off an eight-point run to put the game out of reach.

Seljaas was instrumental for Bountiful (3-6), as the visitors trailed until late in the fourth quarter. He finished with 32 points and swished a pair of free throws with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to put the Braves up by two.

"They are a lot better than their record, that's for sure," said Schroeder of Bountiful. "We've played some pretty good players this year — (Davis High's) Jesse Wade, David Maynard (from Herriman) — we've played Jarriesse Blackmon (of Layton). Zac Seljaas is as good, if not better. He's a good player."

Bingham had its own good play from center Yoeli Childs, who piled up 27 points and added 13 rebounds. Gearig also had 18 points, while Mike Green added 10.

For Bountiful, Jeff Pollard and Justin Green totaled 14 points apiece.

Tarkanian tourney

Both teams participated in the recent Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas. Bountiful, along with Lone Peak, were in a different 16-team division than the one Bingham would win.

"We were in the Premier Division. We wanted to get into the other one, but they told us they went off last year's record, and our record last year wasn't all that good," Schroeder said.

But, as Newbold noted, the Miners did win the championship of their 16-team bracket — and that's all that mattered.

"I thought we played as a team down there," Newbold said. "We just need to keep playing team ball." —
