Santa Clara, Calif. • Tyler Haws played just 24 minutes in BYU's 81-46 win over Santa Clara on Thursday afternoon, but nobody was asking afterward if his sprained ankle was still bothering him.

Instead, Haws, who scored 14 points and had three rebounds and three assists in the blowout, fielded questions about another prolific Cougar scorer from yesteryear — Devin Durrant.

The senior guard passed Durrant on the school's career scoring list, moving into fourth place. He now has 2,289 in his career, behind Michael Smith (2,319), Danny Ainge (2,467) and Jimmer Fredette (2,599).

"I have seen some highlights of [Durrant] and have heard about what a great scorer he was," Haws said. "It is just an honor to have my name up there with his."

Haws said Durrant called him this week to offer congratulations.

"My dad [Marty] has told me a bunch of stories about him, and spent some time with him," Haws said. "I have a ton of respect for that guy, and I was kinda nervous when he reached out. I didn't know what he was going to say, but it was all positive and he just encouraged me a lot. He gave me lots of good advice, on and off the floor."

Fittingly, Haws tied Durrant at 2,285 midway through the first half with a three-point play. He passed him with 4:10 remaining in the first half with a step-back jumper that gave the Cougars a 38-13 lead.

"An all-around [great] game," Haws said. "We got after it from the start, and I am proud of our guys."

BYU coach Dave Rose said he will congratulate Haws in a private conversation "because individual accomplishments during a team season are pretty difficult to manage."

However, he said accomplishments like that one and Kyle Collinsworth (eight points, 15 rebounds) earning WCC Player of the Week honors builds confidence within the team.

"It is amazing to watch Ty, though," Rose said. "That is one thing that I make sure I remind our coaches of every day, is we got a pretty good one here, and we only have a handful of games left, so we have to enjoy him while he is here."
