Riverton • Every time Westlake made a run on Juan Diego Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Riverton holiday tournament, it seemed as if Gabe Colosimo did something big.

Sometimes it came in the form of a steal. Other times the star guard made a big pass. Often, he scored.

The result was a 67-62 overtime victory over Westlake, the seventh Class 5A school to fall to the Soaring Eagle this year.

And Juan Diego will get a chance to take an eighth victory against a 5A foe Wednesday at 5 p.m. when it meets co-host Riverton for the title of the 14-team tournament.

Riverton scored the first seven points and then rolled to a 65-58 victory over surprising Wasatch in the other semifinal.

Colosimo scored 25 points for Juan Diego, many off steals and most from close range. Six came in overtime.

"I just try to get my hand in the passing lanes," he said. "Our press does a good job of letting me anticipate. I like to shoot more but when teams get into me, I will drive."

Both Colosimo and Juan Diego coach Drew Trost said they like to have the ball in his hands during a close contest, which Tuesday's game certainly was.

"He is a big time player," said Trost. "He is one of the best if not the best in state. He came up huge for us down the stretch."

Colosimo said the team draws a lot of plays up for him which allows him to either to set up a teammate or score.

This was a close game all the way. The Soaring Eagle seemed to have things under control when it grabbed a 47-39 lead, only to watch Westlake reel off nine consecutive points.

Avery Ames hit a 3-pointer to give Juan Diego a 52-50 lead with 49 seconds left but Anthony Condie put it into overtime for the Thunder.

Juan Diego scored the first six points in overtime but Westlake's Asa McCord, who led the Thunder with 25 points, kept it close.

The Soaring Eagle seemed bothered at times by Westlake's 6-foot-8 center Brayden Holker and the Thunder's 1-3-1 zone defense.

But, with Colosimo leading the way, Class 3A Juan Diego hung in to win.

"That prepares us for region," said Trost, whose team improved to 9-2 on the season. "We want to play the best. You have to play the best to be the best."

Riverton survived Wasatch's physical, pressing defense to improve to 7-3 on the season.

The Silverwolves started the game strong but trailed 27-26 at halftime. Riverton rallied behind Joey Andrews and Jaron Jones for a big third quarter.

The Silverwolves then built leads as high as 11 in the fourth quarter to stave off the Wasps who looked far better than their 3-7 record would indicate.

Jones finished with 19 to lead Riverton, which kept Wasatch at bay with good fourth quarter free throw shooting.

Andrews added 10. Nathan Dow led the Wasps with 17, while Izzy Ballstaedt added 13.
