Tied after one quarter between Alta and Skyline, the margin grew to a whole point at half for the host Hawks.

After three, Alta's lead doubled to two points.

So you can bet that if anyone from either side popped in a three-pointer in the late stages, it would be a big basket.

And that it was, for Alta senior and Alaska transplant Brandy Bookout. Her trey with 1:34 broke a 38-38 tie and propelled the Hawks to a 47-41 victory Tuesday night.

"For tonight, it couldn't have happened to a better kid," Alta coach Scott Yeager said. "Players and coaches have special relationships, with ups and downs. It was very well-deserved for Brandy."

"Mariah [Martin] had it in there. She got the board in there and she passed it out," said Bookout, who moved to Utah with her family prior to the current school year. "I think we're improving a lot and definitely coming together."

After the 3-pointer, Martin then grabbed another offensive rebound with a minute remaining. The sophomore guard, who finished with 23 points, this time finished the play herself with a basket to make the score 43-38.

That matched the largest lead of the game for Alta (5-3), which came back in the second quarter.

At that juncture, a 27-22 Hawks lead disappeared quickly thanks to a 6-0 run by Skyline (5-4). Paced by Hillary Weixler's 13 points, the Eagles pounded the boards and also got nine points from Olivia Elliss and eight from Kyla Paulus.

"Skyline, they get after it. There's nothing easy," Yeager said. "They play hard, but clean, and you have to be patient and be able to grind it out with those guys."

But the visitors, which applied a full-court press to good effect early, were playing their sixth game in seven days. Part of Skyline's busy week was a trip over the weekend to play in the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas.

"I think they were definitely fatigued from the weekend," Skyline coach coach Lynette Schroeder said. "Alta is coached very well and they've got good players. Every night, we come out to defend well. I think we hold most teams to below their average.

"It [the press] worked well. Alta broke it a couple of times," she added. "We did get some turnovers off of it, but overall my girls just didn't have the energy to maintain it after a long weekend." —
