American Fork • Davis' Jesse Wade is the kind of smooth shooter fans want taking key shots.

So it was only appropriate that after rare free-throw misses and a narrow miss with a buzzer-beater in regulation, Wade was the star in the Darts' 59-56 overtime victory over Sky View on Saturday night.

The victory gave Davis the title in the first annual Utah Elite 8 basketball tournament, while Wade's overtime effort earned him most valuable player honors.

Davis rallied behind the play of Ben Rigby to tie the game at 39 with 5:09 left in the game after trailing 37-31 at the end of three quarters to a good Sky View team. A three-point basket by Davis Landon Swartz with 1:20 tied the game.

Wade had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but barely missed a three-pointer.

He made up for it in overtime by scoring 10 points on a layup and eight of 10 free throws as the Darts improved to 4-2 on the season with their third win in as many days.

"You have got to hit those free throws," said the slender Wade. "I've got confidence in my free throws. It's a mental thing. But it's all good. I missed a few."

He said winning the tournament was a big deal for the Darts because it helped get them ready for the Region One and state tournament races ahead.

Davis Coach Chad Sims echoed that sentiment.

"We are looking forward to region," he said. "Our region is good. We need to get better and get ready for region."

Sims credited Sky View's defense with his team's offensive struggles much of the game.

"That was more to do with Sky View," he said. "They are a great team. They are deep, they can hit shots and they have big guys. It's a tough matchup. Jesse is a good player and he is going to make those shots. Sky View mixed things up defensively and kept us off balance."

Sky View was led by Riley Panter with 22 and Jake Hendricks with 14. Wade finished with 20 while Rigby added 14 for the Darts in the well-run first-year holiday tournament.

Tournament notes • Wade, Rigby, Hendricks, Sky View's Bryce Mortensßon, Bingham's Yoeli Childs and Layton's Julian Blackmon made the all-tournament team.

In Saturday consolation games, Corner Canyon beat American Fork 46-43 in overtime; Mountain Crest topped Brighton 53-51, and Layton downed Bingham 53-50.
