Logan • BYU senior Skyler Halford knows what it's like to play Utah State at the Spectrum.

He looks forward to returning Tuesday night, when the high-scoring Cougars battle the young Aggies in a rivalry that goes back 100 years and includes 230 previous games.

"I'm super excited," Halford said. "I was there my freshman year. It's a great environment to play in. Their fans are nuts. It's a hostile environment. But it's what every basketball player dreams of."

BYU has won two straight in the series, but it hasn't prevailed in Logan since 2000 — a stretch of six games.

The outcome of this meeting could be determined at the three-point line, where the Cougars are exceptional at burying shots and the Aggies are effective on defense.

BYU is making 43.3 percent of its three-pointers, led by Tyler Haws, Chase Fischer and Anson Winder. Those three players are 54 of 116 from long range.

"Everybody gets shots ... in our offense," said Halford, who 3-for-6 on 3-pointers in Saturday night's 90-76 win over Eastern Kentucky.

"We take so many a game that, once we share it, everybody is going to get shots. We make that first pass and it gets contagious. We all start making passes and hitting shots. That's a good part of our team."

Defensively, Utah State has alternated between a switching man-to-man and aggressive zone to limit damage from the 3-point line. In five games, Aggie opponents are shooting only 26 percent on threes.

"We've had some good moments and we've had some ugly moments," said Utah State coach Stew Morrill. "We have to be more consistent if we're going to play with BYU. ...

"They make you try and prepare for a lot of different things with their system. But it all starts with No. 1, can you get back on defense against them? They fly up and down the court."

Utah State also needs redshirt freshman David Collette to get going again.

After averaging 19.5 points on 18 of 25 shooting in the first two games of the season, Collette scored a total of 22 points in a 60-54 victory over Santa Clara and losses to Mississippi State and UC Davis.

Part of the problem involves foul trouble. Collette averages only 24.6 minutes in the last three games. Part of the problem has also been sickness. Collete is battling the flu.

"David is an older freshman but still a freshman," Morrill said. "He started off awfully strong ... and then he's leveled out a little — I think a little bit because of his illness."

A sellout crowd is expected for the renewal of the Utah State-BYU rivalry and Morrill hopes his young players enjoy the experience.

"It should be a fun," he said. "... If you look at it and get all stressed out, that's not how you should approach the game. Great crowd, great in-state rivalry. The rivalry's been around forever. Go enjoy yourself and play hard. Do everything you can to try to get a 'W.'" —
