The Pac-12 South race that technically began Sept. 6 will be decided Friday. USC is out of the picture, even after seemingly getting a head start with that long-ago win at Stanford, but Stanford will still have something to say about the outcome. If the Cardinal beat UCLA, then the Arizona-Arizona State winner will represent the South in next week's Pac-12 championship game vs. Oregon. On to the weekend picks:  Friday's games Stanford at UCLA, 1:30 p.m. MST, ABC In November, UCLA has resembled the team everyone was picturing all summer. The Bruins have asserted themselves on defense, quarterback Brett Hundley has become an effective runner and UCLA has been impressive in wins over Arizona and USC. Stanford is locked into a pattern of beating the teams it should and losing to ranked opponents. UCLA 24, Stanford 17. Arizona State at Arizona, 1:30 p.m. MST, Fox There will be a buzz at Arizona Stadium if Stanford ever takes a lead over UCLA. That's common ground for fans of both the Sun Devils and Wildcats, knowing the possibilities a Cardinal upset would create. Regardless, there's enough motivation to make this game memorable. The health of Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon is a big variable. Arizona State 31, Arizona 28.  Saturday's games Utah at Colorado, 11 a.m. MST, Pac-12 Networks Of all the rivalry pairings since the conference's expansion in 2011, this one has produced the best competition, with three games decided by a touchdown or less. I've kept saying the Buffaloes would beat somebody in the Pac-12 this season, but they've officially run out of chances. Utah 31, Colorado 21.  Notre Dame at USC, 1:30 p.m. MST, Fox This game has lost a lot of its appeal this month, but it is very important to both teams and their fan bases. I was shocked by USC's performance against UCLA last week, but the Trojans should bounce back at home. USC 27, Notre Dame 21.  BYU at California, 2:30 p.m. MST, Pac-12 Networks In August, who would have imagined Cal's being favored in this game? The Bears have improved and BYU has wobbled, although the Cougars feel good about themselves after three wins over lowly opponents. Cal needs a win for bowl eligibility, would which be a big breakthrough. California 35, BYU 31. Oregon at Oregon State, 6 p.m. MST, ABC The Pac-12 is getting good network treatment this weekend, but the Civil War will not be great theater. OSU has crumbled and will fall short of bowl eligibility, while Oregon further positions itself for the College Football Playoff and tunes up for the Pac-12 championship game. Oregon 45, Oregon State 21. Washington at Washington State, 8:30 p.m. MST, Fox Sports 1 The late-night Apple Cup should be worth watching. Washington is playing better lately, having barely lost at Arizona and then crushed Oregon State, while the Cougars keep putting up big numbers behind fill-in quarterback Luke Falk. Washington 42, Washington State 35.  – Kurt Kragthorpe
