Lahaina, Hawaii • Of course the first meeting between former Mountain West Conference rivals BYU and San Diego State since 2011 was a close, riveting thriller that took two overtimes to decide.

What else did you expect?

After BYU blew a five-point lead in the first overtime, the No. 15-ranked Aztecs pulled away in the second overtime and took the 92-87 win at the Lahaina Civic Center in an EA Sports Maui Invitational first-round game.

BYU (3-1) will face Chaminade in a consolation game Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. MST, while SDSU will face Pitt in the semifinals.

San Diego State had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but missed a putback dunk attempt in the final seconds. The Cougars had a chance to win at the end of the first overtime, but Kyle Collinsworth's teardrop shot rolled out at the buzzer.

The Cougars led 76-71 in the first overtime after Tyler Haws hit a jumper with 1:30 remaining, but failed to score from there until early in the second overtime.

Haws, who finished with 26 points, hit a jumper in the second OT to tie it 80-80 with 3:25 left, but Aqeel Quinn's 3-pointer seconds later gave the Aztecs a lead they didn't relinquish.

The Cougars never had the lead in regulation.

They went 14 of 22 from the free-throw line and shot just 38.4 percent.

Like they've done in their first three games, the Cougars played well to start the second half, and cut a 41-33 Aztecs lead at the break to three on Isaac Neilson's 3-point play with 15 minutes remaining.

Collinsworth's putback a minute later got the Cougars to within a point.

But the Cougars could never wrest the lead from their former MWC rivals until overtime.

They fell behind 11-0 before a three-pointer from Chase Fischer ended the drought more than three minutes into the game.

They slowly clawed back, and when Haws hit a three from the corner with 9:15 left in the first half, it was 22-22.

Haws started slow, but his second three-pointer of the first half, tied the score at 26-26 and put him over the 2,000-point mark for his career. He's the fifth player in BYU history to score more than 2,000 points. joining Michael Smith, Devin Durrant, Danny Ainge and Jimmer Fredette.

The Aztecs slowly pulled away in the last seven minutes of the first half, making a pair of three-pointers in that stretch. Winston Shepard's 12th point of the first half, a free throw, gave SDSU a 41-33 halftime lead.

SDSU won the rebounding battle 23-13 in the first half, and shot 48.5 percent while the Cougars shot 39.3 percent in the first 20 minutes. BYU was 6 of 9 from three-point range in the first half, but just 5 of 19 on closer shots. —
