Orem • Only one view was going to be ideal at the end of the Timpview-Sky View contest for the Class 4A state volleyball championship Saturday night.

And even though the Thunderbirds' vision might have included more than a few tears at the conclusion, it was indeed Timpview that went home quite happy.

"We wanted to make sure that, when we were crying today, it was for the right reasons," Timpview coach Kristen Bailey said.

After a 25-23, 25-19, 26-24 victory, Timpview earned its second straight state title.

It was the third time in a row that the Thunderbirds had taken on Sky View in the 4A championship match. Though time and subsequent victories had helped to ease any negative feelings from the past, players like Timpview senior middle blocker Anessa Atwaia still remembered the loss to the Bobcats in 2012.

"I never wanted to feel like that again," Atwaia said while clutching the 4A championship trophy.

Atwaia was one of only two Timpview players who saw action the last time the Thunderbirds lost in a title game.

"I feel like all our hard work paid off today," Atwaia said. "It feels awesome. I'm so happy."

The teams often traded points throughout the match, particularly in the first set. But Sky View, which ousted Springville in a semifinal sweep earlier in the day, never got a lead in the finale when the score entered the 20s.

Tied at 23-23 in the first set, Lacy Haddock put away a kill from the strong set. On the next play, it was her sister Lyndie who hit a shot from the right that clinched the opening set.

In the second set, which was ended on an ace from Sarah Roach, the Bobcats actually never got to the 20 mark.

But Sky View rallied with a 4-0 run late in the third to tie the score at 22-22. With matters still deadlocked at 24-24, Lyndie Haddock and Annie Hofheins slapped down spikes to end the match.

Lacy Haddock had 15 kills for the victors, while Lyndie added eight putaways as well as a pair of blocks. Atwaia and Hofheins contributed seven and six kills, respectively.

"Just because it's my senior year and the last time I'll ever play with these girls, it was special," Lacy Haddock said. "It was a hard year with all our workouts, but with this at the end, it's all worth it."

Timpview's path to the championship match included a semifinal sweep over region rival Springville earlier Saturday at Utah Valley University.

For Sky View, the closing match of the season saw senior Shannon Sorensen collect nine kills and four blocks while Savannah Boehme added seven kills.

"I felt it took us too long to adjust and get into our game. Timpview does a great job of keeping teams out of system," Sky View coach Malayna Knowles said. "The way they serve, and the tight offense they run, it's hard for the other team to transition into their own offense." —
