They say good things come to those who wait. That's exactly what Roy High School had to do as they earned their first playoff win since 1983 in impressive fashion, rolling to a 55-14 victory over Orem in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs.

After falling behind early, the Royals used an explosive running attack to put the game out of reach. With the score 6-0 in favor of Orem in the first quarter, junior running back Matty Matautia scored his first of four rushing touchdowns, bolting 60 yards on Roy's first offensive play from scrimmage. On his next three runs he would score from 3, 8 and 38 yards, putting the Royals in front 28-6 with less than a minute gone in the 2nd quarter.

Before the first half was over the Royals used a timely pass from senior signal caller Tyler Skidmore to Baby Tee Eteuati to increase their lead. Then, just before the break senior Cody Hobbs intercepted Orem quarterback Tucker Camp and waltzed in untouched for an 11-yard pick six return.

The Royals defense was dominant all night, keeping the Tigers off balance by forcing two turnovers and sacking Camp nine times.

Even with his team remaining undefeated with an impressive home playoff win, Roy head coach Fred Fernandes knows that his squad can't rest on their laurels.

"We got the first round taken care of and it's time to start preparing for the next round," Fernandes said.

But the team will get to savor the victory for a little while, "they'll get to enjoy it until tomorrow morning and then it's back to business and these guys wouldn't want it any other way," added Fernandes.

Despite the loss, Orem did have some bright moments. A 33-yard TD pass from Camp to James Wadsworth on the opening drive of the game gave the Tigers their only lead. Orem found the end zone for a consolation score again late in the 3rd quarter on a 25 yard pass from Camp to Kody Codner. Storylines
