Provo • Like almost every other college basketball team in the country, the BYU Cougars are tired of playing against themselves. They've been doing it for several weeks, including Wednesday night's Cougar Tipoff intrasquad game at the Marriott Center, where Tyler Haws basically toyed with whichever teammate tried to stop him in a 35-point performance.

Coach Dave Rose's team will get the opportunity to go against someone else on Saturday, as BYU plays host to the Colorado School of Mines in an exhibition game. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. and the game will be televised by BYUtv.

"I will be glad to get to Saturday where we are playing against somebody else," Rose said after the Tipoff, which was actually two games in one.

The white team won the first game, 34-27, and the blue team won the second game, 56-45, after some players switched sides.

"My initial reaction was that we did a lot of good things," Rose said. "I am glad we got a lot of guys to play and it was a nice little crowd. We had way too many fouls and turnovers. Those are things we will really need to work on."

After Saturday, the Cougars will play one more exhibition game — against Seattle Pacific on Nov. 8 — before opening the 2014-15 season at home on Nov. 14 against Long Beach State.

Aytes out for awhile

Jamal Aytes, the 6-foot-6 forward who transferred from UNLV last January and is eligible to play on Dec. 20 against Stanford, could be out longer than that.

Aytes underwent ankle surgery on Wednesday for an injury that has nagged him for several months, and Rose said they will learn a timetable for his return in the next day or two.

Forward Nate Austin (sore back) and guard Kyle Collinsworth (returning from ACL surgery) also did not play Wednesday night.

Haws in top 100

Haws, the fifth-leading scorer in school history with 1,944 points, is ranked No. 34 on a list of the top 100 players in college basketball presented by CBSSports.com on Thursday. Collinsworth, who averaged 14.0 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists last year, did not make the list.

"Haws doesn't look or play like Jimmer Fredette, but he sure scores like him," wrote Gary Parrish. "The 6-5 guard averaged 21.7 points per game in 2012-13, 23.2 points per game in 2013-14. Can he hit 25 points per game this season? I wouldn't rule it out."

Utah's Delon Wright (23), Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos (26) and Byron Wesley (74) and Brad Waldow (97) of Saint Mary's also made the list.

Briefly

Haws was 4 for 4 from 3-point range on Wednesday night, after saying Monday he worked on his 3-point shooting the entire summer. … Kyle Davis, the transfer from Utah State who has to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules, was 8 for 10 for 16 points in the scrimmage. Returned missionary Isaac Neilson had a double-double: 13 points and 10 rebounds.
