Ogden • If Weber State coach Jay Hill knows who is starting at quarterback Saturday against Northern Arizona, he's not telling.

Eight games into the season Hill spent the week deciding whether to start Billy Green or Jadrian Clark, sophomores who played extensively in last week's 30-17 loss to Portland State.

Clark made the first start of his career against the Vikings, but Green replaced him early in the second half after a fumbled snap cost Weber State a possession near midfield.

Turnovers have been the Wildcats' (0-8) biggest problem in Hill's first season as head coach. They are minus-14 in turnover margin — last in the country among FCS schools.

In four Big Sky Conference games — close losses to Southern Utah (31-28), Cal Poly (30-24), ninth-ranked Montana State (23-13) and Portland State (30-17) — Weber has committed nine turnovers.

According to Hill, he will start the quarterback who can best avoid turnovers.

"I'm going to play the guy who's taking care of the ball — the guy who's competing," Hill said. "They both have good skill sets."

Against Portland State, Weber State committed three turnovers. The 'Cats trailed, 23-17, midway through the fourth quarter before the Vikings scored to seal their win with 2:25 remaining.

The good news?

"I thought [Tuesday] was one of our best practices all year long," Hill said. "So maybe it was a wakeup call that we have to get this thing back on track."

It won't be easy against Northern Arizona, which is 5-3 overall but 3-1 in the Big Sky and well-positioned to challenge for a playoff berth, given a favorable schedule down the stretch.

"If [we] are discouraged and don't come out ready to play," Hill said, "they'll kick [our] butt. ... Right now, they're playing as well as anybody in the league." —
