Sandy • The Waterford Ravens took a two-goal lead in the blink of an eye. Turns out, that blink of an eye was more than enough to punch the program's ticket to yet another 2A soccer championship match. Thanks to two goals in two minutes within the first eight minutes of their 2A semifinal against Delta on Friday afternoon, the Ravens qualified for their seventh consecutive title match.

"Everybody wants to start out like we did, where you just explode," Waterford coach Tim Dolbin said. "I think they were stunned, for whatever reason."

The Ravens will meet region rival Rowland Hall on Saturday afternoon at Rio Tinto Stadium for a chance to hoist their sixth state crown since 2006.

Waterford's quick start began in the sixth minute when Emily McIntyre snapped a header to the far post off a corner kick delivered in by Jacqueline Pollard. Through a sea of Delta defenders, McIntyre dropped down to meet the ball, putting just enough spin to roll into the far post.

A minute later, KitKat Morrill sprinted into the box and found herself in alone as a loose ball rolled directly to her feet with only the Delta goalkeeper the beat. She put her foot to the ball, thundering it into the back of the net for an early 2-0 advantage.

"After that," Dolbin said, "it was a dogfight."

Delta settled in after conceding two early goals and tried to string together some offense, but Waterford's possession-style attack kept the Rabbits from mounting many threats and finding their way back into the game. Prior to the match, Dolbin reminded his group of the dramatic 1-0 semifinal victory over Delta in 2013, when the Ravens stunned the Rabbits with a 79th-minute free-kick strike.

"That's how we approached it: These guys are going to want to beat you so bad," Dolbin explained. "We have to be ready."

The Ravens were and are back in the place they're so used to being: Playing for a state championship. They'll face Rowland Hall, but will likely have last year's 2A final loss to Summit Academy on their mind.

"Getting them to remember that we lost last year is easy and getting them up for the game is easy," Dolbin said. "Now getting them focused in the direction we want to go is hard for every coach, so that's what we'll try to do."
