The Lone Peak volleyball team was likely aware that it would be tough making a deep run in the upcoming Class 5A state tournament as a one-trick offensive pony.

And the fourth-ranked Knights on Thursday certainly showed they were more than just BYU-bound senior Emily Lewis.

Behind a variety of strong performances at the net, Lone Peak surprised top-ranked Pleasant Grove with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-23 sweep in the last home appearance for its senior class.

"We're getting better everytime we step out on the court. We knew we couldn't win the region, but we wanted to sweep the last half of region," said Lone Peak coach Deanna Meyer, whose team also beat third-ranked Lehi on Tuesday.

"That was our goal and we accomplished what we could do," Meyer added. "I love that we're peaking at the right time going into state."

Lewis, with 10 kills, provided her usual productivity for Lone Peak (9-3, 9-2 in 4-5A) and got some key hits from the back row.

But teammates McCall Kinkade and Makalla Jarema, both seniors, also combined for a pair of big tandem blocks in the first two games as visiting Pleasant Grove (11-2, 10-1 in 4-5A) struggled to grab momentum and keep it.

"We didn't play a good game tonight. We just didn't have it tonight," Vikings coach Allyce Jones said. The defending state champs battled late in the second and third games, but also gave up late runs to position themselves behind the eight-ball.

A 5-0 run by Lone Peak in the second game was marked by three straight hitting errors from the Vikings, sandwiched by back-row kills from Lewis. Pleasant Grove, behind 22-16, got back those five with an answer run before committing two more hitting mistakes — after drawing within a point. Tied at 23-23 in the third, a serve into the net by the Vikes put the Knights at match point. Lewis finished off the second and third games with kills.

"This is exciting. It was super nerve-racking, but it was a great experience and I'm so happy with the turnout," said Jarema, who had seven kills, three blocks and only one swinging error on the night.

Meyer pointed out that senior outside hitter Josie Bursell, who finished with six kills and one block, also had only one swinging error during the match.

"She had a great night for us tonight and she wasn't with us the last time we played them (a 3-1 loss at Pleasant Grove)," Meyer said. "She was hurt the first half of the season. She was a big factor tonight."

"I think we just really wanted it more," Bursell said. "We made it happen. It was a rought night though. It wasn't like easy cake — it was hard."

Another big difference of late for Lone Peak was going to a two-setter rotation with the addition of junior Jaysa Funk to help senior Rylee Rogers with those duties.

Funk's presence wasn't just felt in her distribution. She also had a pair of blocks and two timely kills herself in key moments.
