Draper • Ireland Dunn refused to surrender the game to penalty kicks.

In the second overtime against last year's reigning 5A state champions, Dunn never stopped believing in herself or her Davis Darts.

With seconds left on the clock, the junior forward eagerly grabbed a cross from Regyn Youngberg at the top of the box. Charging forward, Dunn squared up and unloaded the game-winner with 12 seconds left on the clock.

Gang-tackled by her teammates and the Davis faithful who stormed the field, Dunn punched the Darts' ticket to Friday's 5A championship game at Rio Tinto Stadium. They will play Lone Peak on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

"All that was going through my mind is that PKs freak me out," Dunn said of the 2-1 victory. "Our team, in overtime, kicked butt. It just shows that we can come back from anything."

Davis coach Souli Phongsavath had prepared for PKs in the week leading up to the Brighton match, but was relieved that Dunn finished with her late-game heroics.

"I had my lineup ready. I felt like it was a formality we were going into them," Phongsavath said. "I'd rather win that way than a PK shootout. Fantastic."

Davis took the lead early. In the ninth minute, Makenzie Bell sent a free kick into the box that Olivia Wade chipped up. Driving through the scrum, Mikayla Colohan pierced a header for the goal.

But Brighton was able to equalize the match in the 57th minute with a free kick from McKell Kellogg that Raquel Watts finished with her head.

Davis excelled at spreading the field and creating crisp passing lanes. Madison Garlock credited the training leading up to the semifinal match as keeping the Darts in the match going into overtime.

"We're a really technical team with excellent athletes," Garlock said. "We knew we weren't going to lose, we just needed to find a way to finish."

Colohan said going to the championship game is the last step to finishing the dream. Confident that they can match up against anyone in the state, Colohan said the Darts are ready for the championship.

"We can take whoever, whatever team that makes the cut," Colohan said. "We'll be able to handle them." —
