Six Top Voting Questions Answered:

1. What is a primary election?

A primary election is an election in which you help select a party's nominee for the general election. This year the Republican and Democratic Parties are holding a primary election, but you can only vote in one.

A primary election for non-partisan positions, such as school board members, narrows down the candidate pool to two candidates for the general election. Depending on where you live, you may have a chance to vote for non-partisan positions.

2. What positions are up for this year's primary election?

The positions you can vote for depends on the party primary you select and where you live. Major primary contests include U.S. Congressional District 3, Governor, and 11 Utah legislative seats for the Republican primary, U.S. Senate for the Democratic primary, and 7 nonpartisan state school board seats. Your ballot may also include county and local school board primaries. You can find your sample ballot and read candidate statements and biographies on VOTE.UTAH.GOV.

3. Which party primary can I participate in?

Any voter can vote in the Democratic Party primary. To participate in the Republican Party primary, you must be a registered Republican. You may only vote in one party's primary. Visit VOTE.UTAH.GOV to see if you are affiliated with a party.

If your area has a non-partisan primary, such as a primary for local school board members, your ballot will have non-partisan candidates regardless of whether you vote in the Republican or Democratic primaries.

4. How and Where can I Vote?

Each county may be running the election a little differently, so it's important that you visit VOTE.UTAH.GOV to determine how and where to vote in your county. On the VOTE.UTAH.GOV homepage, you can easily enter your address or your name and see detailed information about where and how you can vote. Many counties are conducting their elections entirely by mail, whereas some will have polling locations on Election Day. If you live in a county that is not entirely by mail, you can request a mail ballot until June 23rd. You must postmark your ballot no later than the day before Election Day (June 27th) or deliver it to the county clerk by Election Day.

5. How do I know if I'm registered to vote?

If you're not sure whether you're registered to vote, or if you don't know whether you're affiliated with a party, the VOTE.UTAH.GOV website is for you. When you visit the VOTE.UTAH.GOV's homepage, search your voting information using "My Voter Profile." Once you have entered this information, you can view your voter registration information. If you're not registered to vote, you can register online here.
