Elbow room at Alta View
Sandy » Change has become a constant at Alta View Hospital, and today patients can check out some of those changes without an appointment.
The hospital is hosting an open house to unveil the Alta View Specialty Center, a new outpatient operating and clinic facility. The 60,000 square-foot center will double the hospital's capacity for many procedures and free up desperately needed space at the hospital.
"It's one of the few times you get to go into the OR standing up," joked Susan Tanner, the center's director of operations.
At the open house, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m. today, prospective patients can view the four new endoscopy rooms, each a roomy 650 square feet. The extra space was almost overwhelming at first, said Dixie VanWinkle, the nursing supervisor. Space at the old facility is so tight, medical staff have an elaborately choreographed dance to move about the room. Now monitors and computer screens operate on booms, freeing up floor space and making it easy to move about.
The facility can handle almost any type of outpatient surgery, said Pua Jorgensen, director of surgical services. Even minor general surgery cases can be accommodated. The facility is currently limited by equipment, but has plenty of room to add general surgery apparatus if the need arises.
In addition to the new endoscopy rooms, the facility features four out-patient surgical suites with plenty of preparation and recovery rooms. An entire wing of the building is devoted to new clinic space with extra exam rooms, including specialty rooms for audiology and ophthalmology.
The space is expected to fill quickly, Tanner said, and while the new bays mean more OR time for physicians, patient need is constantly increasing. The neighborhood around the hospital is seeing a demographic shift to older adults, rather than young families, meaning an increased need for medical care. The hospital recently opened a senior care clinic, specializing in health issues for those older than 55.
Patients and medical staff will begin using the new facilities on Monday. The specialty center frees up space at the Sandy Clinic next door, which undergoes a remodel starting July 1.
