Sandy resident Lucile MacKay recently celebrated her 101st birthday. She and her husband, John, were married for more than 60 years and raised three sons.

MacKay recalls a favorite childhood activity of taking a horse and buggy to a trolley station and then riding downtown to eat in the restaurant at ZCMI. She also loves to sing and play the piano. Although she never took lessons, she was able to learn by watching and listening to her sister.

MacKay remembers watching the construction of Redwood Road by prisoners restrained by ball-and-chain and clothed in black and white striped uniforms.

She has had a lifelong affiliation with the LDS church, which has provided her with many opportunities including missions in Hawaii and Vermont.

Her keen interest in genealogy prompted her to pen her memoirs during her 90s. MacKay spends much of her time these days reading church literature.

When asked what her secret to surpassing the century mark is, she says, "Live a clean life."
