Berlin • Lufthansa plans to proceed with its long-haul flights from Frankfurt on Tuesday despite a pilots' strike, the airline said Monday.

Germany's biggest airline said all 40 long-haul flights from Germany's busiest airport will go ahead, suggesting it expects to have enough staff to run them. But it warned passengers should check for changes to departure times.

The pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit had earlier announced its members would walk out from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (0700 to 1500 GMT) Tuesday to reinforce their demand that Lufthansa keep paying a transition payment for those wanting to retire early.

The airline, which faces tough competition from European budget airlines and major Gulf airlines, wants to cut those payments.

The work stoppage follows several strikes in the past three weeks by pilots at Lufthansa and its Germanwings subsidiary.
