Mesquite, Nev. • A 36-year-old Nevada woman was sentenced to a year in the Mesquite city jail and ordered to pay almost $750 in restitution for raising money with a false claim that her 7-year-old son had cancer.

Mesquite police Sgt. MaQuade Chesley says Shawnanna Starr Guerrero Flores pleaded guilty Monday in Mesquite Justice Court to misdemeanor charges including obtaining money under false pretenses and obstruction.

Moapa Justice of the Peace Ruth Kolhoss also ordered Flores to undergo a mental evaluation and serve 500 hours of community service with an organization that helps cancer victims.
