Washington • Missouri Rep. Todd Akin has raised about $1.6 million for his Senate bid in the months after party officials sought to distance themselves from him for his comments on "legitimate rape."

Akin's third quarter fund raising report, which includes donations from mid-July through the end of September, shows he has about $553,000 cash-on-hand. His opponent, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill raised $5.8 million in the same time period, with about $2.1 million on hand. That indicates Akin is likely to be dramatically outspent in the race.

Akin had not publicly released his quarterly finance figures, which were due Monday. He refused demands by some in the GOP to drop out and predicted that the party will flood his campaign with cash in an effort to oust the politically vulnerable McCaskill.
