Mary Bowman, a senior associate athletics director for the University of Utah and senior woman administrator, will retire in December, ending a 19-year career, Utah athletics announced Wednesday morning.

Bowman oversees student-athlete support services at the U., leading such groups as the Student-Athlete Advisory Comittee, the Life Skills Program and the Student-Athlete Wellness team. She also was the administrator for academic services, athletic training and sport nutrition among her many roles in the department over the course of her career.

Also a frequent NCAA appointee, Bowman served on the Softball Selection Committee, the Softball Rules Committee, and the Ski Committee while also serving as a site representative and tournament director for several NCAA events in those sports.

The Iowa native was a teacher, counselor and coach at the high school level prior to her tenure at the U., including coaching volleyball at nearby East High School.

"Mary has been an incredible advocate for our student athletes and she makes sure we always remember our primary mission is to do right by them first and foremost," Athletics Director Chris Hill said in a school news release. "She has crossed paths with more of our student-athletes than probably any other single person in this department and she has worked tirelessly to make sure their academic, emotional and nutritional needs are met."
