Utah football player Moana Ofahengaue has been hospitalized with a serious head injury suffered on Sunday night, university officials said.

A redshirt freshman defensive lineman, Ofahengaue was in an accident on a motorized bike. He is listed in critical condition at the university hospital, although family members are said to be optimistic about his long-term recovery.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Moana and his family during this very difficult time," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said.

"He is a beloved member of our team and we will support him in his recovery in any way we can,"
